Max Allan Collins' detective, Nathan Heller, is a tough ex-Chicago cop turned private investigator who winds up investigating many of the most infamous crimes of the mid-20th century from the Lindbergh kidnapping to the Kennedy assassination. These books are a fascinating blend of fact and fiction as many famous historical figures wind up rubbing shoulders with Heller as tries to crack some seemingly unsolvable cases. One of my favorites is Flying Blind, a poignant mix of mystery and romance, as Heller falls in love with his newest client, Amelia Earhart, and then tries to find her after her plane vanishes.
